The canvas is empty, and the possibilities are endless.

Blank Canvas Productions was founded for the simple reason of creating entertainment without other people’s restrictions. The Company was founded by James Jooste, Ndili Stamper and later Nkanyiso Yeni. James Jooste was an ex-DHS student who in his one and only year at DHS wrote a small webseries called Higher Grade. After leaving the school he continued to work on the series but writing took a back seat in his life until November 2014 when Ndili Stamper asked him to write a play based on that very same webseries.

James set out to do what he believed to be the impossible, writing a play. After a few months, he finished the first rough draft and submitted it, it was rejected by the all-boys school as it focused on a young girl. The writer refused to change anything as this project had been worked on for so long prior to its incarnation as a play that any changes were out of the question. At first a joke, BCP became so much more, it became a dream. Nkanyiso Yeni was added to the team at first as an assistant director but eventually he grew to be one of the partners.

With hopes of doing Higher Grade being shut down with its high set demands and other elements that couldn’t be accomplished. They set out to do something else, after our 2 day Variety show event they went into production mode with their first major play ‘It’s Not Your Fault!’. With the end of ‘It’s Not Your Fault!’ they added their sound and lighting technician Dylan Jooste to the team as their Technical Consultant. In August 2016 they followed up with their second major production a romantic-comedy titled ‘LOVE?’

Although they’re still fresh faces in the theatre industry and despite their lack of experience they still aim to bring entertainment at the highest possible quality and are always looking at ways to improve their business.

Blank Canvas Productions is more than a company it’s an idea, a hope, an ambition to ensure theatre stays alive in South Africa.
